At 31 campuses in 7 states, serving 5,200 students and engaging 4,000 volunteers, we mobilize a second shift of afternoon educators, who provide academic support, leadership development, and apprenticeships: hands-on projects taught by volunteer experts. Citizen Schools is at the forefront of a movement to educate children, strengthen communities, and increase access to the American Dream.


    The Science of Making Ice Cream

    In President Obama’s 2011 State of the Union address, he challenged young people who were contemplating the direction of their career by saying, “If you want to make a difference in the life of a nation; if you want to make a difference in the life of a child – become a teacher.” Although I am not the target demographic for President Obama’s challenge, I was moved by his words.     How the Teaching Fellowship is Like Water Skiing

    Water-skiing sounds great, but when you actually do it for the first time, it’s pretty terrifying. I was just a kid when I tried it for the first time and, while I’ve gone on to like water skiing quite a bit, that first experience left me a little scarred! When the boat takes off and yanks you violently through the water it’s a bit of a nightmare. You have this deluge of rushing water crushing over you. It’s churning wildly and you can’t see anything.
