Student ConsultantI was part of an interdisciplinary team of engineering and business students consulting with HERO, a non- profit in Greensboro, Alabama, on their custom bamboo bikes business that provides job skills training for impoverished young adults. HERO had the product, the people, and the story, but no market. I drew on my work as a Global Entrepreneurship Monitor field researcher to plan our research roadmap. My partner and I interviewed dozens of industry professionals, following leads until we found the perfect niche for HERO’s product: the green hotel industry, which is eager to give guests bike rentals. We created a fun, interactive, geo-coded database of over 250 green hotels; talked with hotel managers to uncover their needs; and created a detailed sales strategy. As a result of our findings, HERO is gearing up to sell bamboo bikes to green hotels and help young people in Greensboro experience the power of entrepreneurship.
